ESPL Foundation

ESPL FOUNDATION is a not-for-profit organization formed for the purpose of raising money in support of the Eastern Shore’s Regional Public Library and Heritage Center in Parksley, Virginia. The Foundation has annual revenues that fluctuate between $200,000 and $800,000. The initial goal of raising money for a new building has been achieved. Ongoing fundraising will continue to build endowments and secure grants for Library needs. The ideal volunteer here would spend 15 to 20 hours per month on his or her duties, plus attending monthly Board meetings in Accomack County; total annual hours roughly 240.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Board meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of the month at 9:30 a.m. and last about two hours. The Treasurer is the chief financial officer and is expected to be active in reviewing all significant activities of the Foundation having financial implications. The Treasurer is one of the six officers.

  • Review the admin person’s performance of the accounting functions, including the monthly closing of the books and preparation of the financial statements. The Treasurer signs checks prepared by the admin person.

  • Annually, coordinate with the external auditor and approve the final audited financial statements.

  • Review IRS and Commonwealth of Virginia annual filings which are prepared by an outside CPA firm.

All Officer positions are appointed for one-year terms, with reappointment expected for several years. The Foundation carries Director and Officer insurance. Board members are expected to participate in fundraising, though no specific goal is administered for personal contributions. Succession to President is possible for someone who displays the interest and talent.

This is a very satisfying job for someone who is interested in community involvement, has a financial background, and likes to work with a small and committed management team.
