About the organization:
The United Spinal Association is a national 501(c) (3) nonprofit membership organization dedicated to empowering and 
advocating for people living with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D), to discover greater independence and quality of
life. We are the leading national organization directly serving and advocating for people with SCI/D, all wheelchair users and 
their loved ones, providing resources, one-on-one guidance, comprehensive programs and services, advocacy, and peer 
support at no cost to members. 


The Virginia chapter (USAofVa) was founded in 2015 and operates under the mission “To Educate, Empower, and Enable all Virginians living with SCI/D to achieve their highest level of independence.” The mission is supported by extensive ever-evolving programming including Peer and Family Mentoring, USAofVa Ramp Project, durable medical equipment donation 
closet, educational workshops, activity-based support groups, and social activities.
Time commitment:
All Board members are elected to 3-year volunteer terms and are expected to devote 2-3 hrs per month towards impacting 
the SCI/D community
Responsibilities:
Board members’ roles include conducting the activities of the organization in coordination with the Executive Director and 
have the following responsibilities: 
Assurance of Integrity and Accountability
• Ensuring that the organization meets all legal requirements and applicable State and Federal regulations. 
• Providing proper financial oversight to ensure the short- and long-term needs of the organization. 
• Preparing for, attending, and participating in 75% of Board meetings (1hr, 2nd Tuesdays of each month. 
• Participating in one or more Board committees.
• Adhering to the organization’s code-of-conduct policy. 
• Providing candid, respectful and constructive criticism, comments, and advice regarding the organization. 
Acquisition and Management of Resources
• Securing financial resources by making a personal annual contribution and identifying and soliciting 
potential donors. 
• Utilizing expertise, contacts and resources to benefit the organization. 
• Determining eligibility for and recruiting new Board Members.
Planning and Evaluation of Programs and Services
• Assuring that the organization has a useful purpose and well-articulated vision and that the services, 
programs and activities are consistent with that vision and purpose. 
• Developing and accessing strategic plans, goals and objectives for effective operation.
• Attending and supporting functions, fund raising events, and activities. 
• Setting goals and expectations for employees and evaluating their performance
